Medically supervised detoxification — safe withdrawal management as the first step toward recovery
Detoxification — detox — is the process of clearing substances from the body while managing the symptoms of withdrawal safely. For many substances, withdrawal can be medically serious: alcohol and benzodiazepine withdrawal can cause seizures; opioid withdrawal, while rarely life-threatening, can be extremely uncomfortable and difficult to manage alone. Medical detox provides clinical supervision, medication where appropriate, and the stabilization necessary before longer-term treatment can begin.
Detox is not treatment for addiction on its own. It addresses physical dependence but does not address the psychological, behavioral, and social dimensions of addiction. Most people who complete detox benefit significantly from continuing into a rehabilitation program — residential or outpatient — immediately afterward. The transition matters: the period immediately after detox is a high-risk time for relapse.
The facilities listed here offer medically supervised detox as a licensed care type. If you are uncertain whether detox is the right starting point, speaking with a doctor or an addiction specialist is the best first step.
